The deep-sea bone-eating snot-flower worm (Osedax) survives entirely on a diet of whale skeletons. They have no mouths, stomachs or guts. They secrete a concentrated acid to melt their way directly through the solid bone of decaying whales. Hundreds of microscopic dwarf males live permanently inside the translucent “snot” sheath of a single female. These males never grow past their larval stage. They enter the female’s body while still tiny larvae, stop developing physically and spend their entire lives inside her body acting essentially as microscopic sperm factories. Because they lack a digestive system, they cannot actually process the bone they dissolve. They rely on a massive colony of specialized symbiotic bacteria packed inside their root-like structures to digest the whale fats and proteins for them.

You can lift a west highland white terrier by their tail. It is an extension of their spine incase they get stuck in a rodent hole.
